Family betrayal revealed publicly.

In the Redford community, a tale of family trust gone awry has surfaced. 33-year-old Darius Nance has found himself at the center of a legal firestorm. Shockingly, it’s alleged that this grandson has been caught with his hand in the proverbial cookie jar, embezzling thousands of dollars from his own grandfather.

The whole sordid incident began when Nance’s grandfather was admitted to a nursing facility in nearby Bloomfield Hills way back in October 2022. Fast-forward to February 2023, and Nance was made the legal guardian of his granddad. This decision, made by the Oakland County Probate Court, set the stage for a whole heap of trouble.

Things started to unravel when Nance seemingly failed to make a single payment for his grandfather’s care at the nursing facility. But it wasn’t just lack of payment that raised eyebrows. Suspicion grew as Nance was discovered to be writing multiple checks from his granddad’s account. It wasn’t the number of checks, but their purpose that landed Nance in hot water. These checks were found not to be for his grandfather’s needs but used for Nance’s personal business.

The Redford local has now been slapped with a charge of embezzlement from a vulnerable adult. Falling under the category of $1,000 or more but less than $20,000, this charge carries some serious ramifications. The consequences? Nance is looking at the possibility of five years behind bars and/or a fine that could reach $10,000.!

It doesn’t end there, though. The fine could also be three times the value of the money or property involved – whichever is the greater. Nance’s future now hangs in the balance and is due in the 48th District Court on September 3 for a probable cause conference. Following this, his preliminary examination is lined up for September 9.

The community, and particularly, the family members of the elderly victim are now left to grapple with the ripple effects of this disturbing case. The question on everyone’s lips – How could a trusted family member exploit his vulnerable grandfather in such a callous manner? These proceedings will no doubt be watched closely by many in the community hoping for justice to be served.
