Road Closure in Northville for Demolition of Iconic Northville Downs

In a recent announcement made by the city of Northville, Mich., a temporary road closure will take place on S. Center Street between Cady Street and Seven Mile Road this Saturday to facilitate demolition works of the noted Northville Downs.

Saturday Road Closure for Demolition Works

Officials shared that the street will be off-limits from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday. The closure could be potentially extended to Sunday if any unforeseen events arise that might hinder operations.

The closure isn’t just for the demolition, either. Crews will also be using this time to work on underground utilities. Preliminary demolition efforts had already kicked off earlier this month with vertical steel beams of the clubhouse being brought down by a tall excavator.

The demolitions that are scheduled for Saturday include the removal of a signature overhang which has been a distinctive feature of the Northville Downs.

Response to Recent Oil Spill

The recent decisions for demolition have not been without controversy, however. Last month, residents raised concerns over an oil spill at the site that was a result of the ongoing demolition work. Portions of the spill found their way to the Rouge River.

In response to environmental concerns, the city authorities installed two booms to address the spill and hired a private contractor to clean up the area. The measures taken by the city were perceived as responsive and effective in addressing the concerns raised by the local community.
