This week in Novi, MI, residents have the chance to get informed about upcoming roadwork that will impact traffic on Novi Road. The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), along with the cities of Novi and Northville, is hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, October 23, to discuss the planned construction set to take place in 2025-2026.
The meeting will run from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hillside Middle School, located at 775 North Center Street in Northville. This open-house format means there won’t be a formal presentation, so attendees can wander in and out, asking questions of RCOC staff as they go.
The construction project, estimated to cost $6.7 million, will mainly be funded by federal money, with additional support coming from RCOC, the cities of Novi and Northville, and Oakland County through the Tri-Party Program.
The roadwork will happen in two phases. Phase 1 involves reconstructing the curve on Novi Road between 8 Mile Road and Allen Road/River Rouge, scheduled to start in the fall of 2025. During this phase, the section of Novi Road will be closed to through traffic, with detours set up via 8 Mile Road to Meadowbrook Road to 9 Mile Road and back.
Phase 2 will cover most of the work and is planned for 2026. During this time, Novi Road will be shut to northbound traffic but will remain open for southbound travel. This decision was made after a request from Novi for access to emergency services.
Currently, this stretch of Novi Road handles around 13,700 vehicles each day, so the upcoming changes will be significant for local commuters.
For those who can’t make it to the meeting, more details can be found on the RCOC website, under the “Road Projects” section. Interested residents can specifically look for the page titled “Novi Road 8 Mile Road to 9 Mile Road” for updates and information.
