Michigan, August 30, 2024 – The weather forecast for Michigan has been updated to include the possibility of severe thunderstorms and even tornadoes on Friday. Major cities including Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, and Bay City are all in the risk zone.
A cold front moving through Lower Michigan is anticipated to usher a significant change in weather, setting up the stage for severe storms in the heat of the afternoon and early evening. Accompanied by escalating humidity levels in eastern Lower Michigan, these conditions are expected to fuel sporadic severe storms.
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has upgraded the severe weather threat for key regions including the Saginaw Bay area, the Thumb, the Ann Arbor area, and the Detroit area.
The revised weather forecast includes risks of high wind gusts, large hail, and even tornadoes, with the highest risk anticipated in the yellow-designated area. With a risk of wind surge from the south-southwest during the storm period, the SPC anticipates conditions ripe for rotation in thunderstorms and potentially, an isolated tornado or two.
The cities under potential tornado threat – Saginaw, Bay City, Midland, Flint, Ann Arbor, Detroit and all parts of the Thumb region – have a two to four percent chance of experiencing a tornado within 25 miles. Realistically, such a forecast suggests the likelihood of one or two tornadoes in the highlighted region.
The severe wind gust risk is pinned between 15 percent and 29 percent in the yellow area. Despite their brief duration, wind gusts from severe thunderstorms can be dangerous and should not be taken lightly. Residents are advised to keep a keen eye on the radar for approaching storms and be prepared to seek shelter.
The probability of large hail, meanwhile, is relatively lower due to the high atmospheric temperatures making it challenging for ice to form.
If you are planning to be outside or traveling on Friday afternoon, particularly from the Saginaw/Bay City area south to Detroit and Ann Arbor, be ready to seek shelter as severe thunderstorms potentially roll through. It’s crucial to stay updated with any additional changes to the severe weather forecast to ensure safety.
