In South Lyon, a local teen is making waves and breaking the mold in the national dance scene. Cameron Janson, a South Lyon High School senior, crushed the competition this summer, winning two national dance competitions. In the process, he’s inspiring other young male performers to follow their own paths.
Janson nabbed the Senior Dancer of the Year title at the Tremaine Dance Convention & Competitions in Orlando. He also earned the rank of Senior Outstanding Dancer at the New York City Dance Alliance competition in Phoenix. Both of these victories represent significant milestones in Janson’s dance journey, a journey that started when he was just 5 years old.
“I started dancing as part of a package deal when my sister signed up for classes,” Janson fondly recalls. “Eventually, my sister gave up, but I unexpectedly fell in love with dance.”
Over the years, Janson honed his skills in various dance styles, with a particular emphasis on classical ballet. Despite facing bullying for his passion as a male dancer, Janson pushed through, believing strongly in his love for dance and his identity as a dancer.
“Being a male in dance indeed brings its own challenges, such as bullying,” Janson admits. “Many still struggle to accept young men in the world of dance. But I’ve learned to not let others’ opinions define me. Dance is a passion that brings me unparalleled joy and I am proud of my journey.”
In addition to the recognition he’s gained, Janson has also taken on the role of a mentor and a role model. Through his work with Tremaine Dance Conventions, Janson offers guidance and counsel to younger dancers, especially young boys, who are navigating the dance world.
Janson doesn’t stop there. He is also giving back to the dance community as a brand ambassador for Tiger Friday, a top dancewear company. The company’s CEO, Bree Hafen, is ecstatic about having Janson on their team. She believes that his influence has been a game-changer for them and has helped shape a better future for male dancewear.
As for what’s next, Janson is keeping an open mind, exploring various paths including attending the University of Arizona, joining a dance conservatory, or moving to New York or LA to pursue dance professionally. One thing is for sure: dance will remain at the center of his future pursuits.
