Superintendent for Wayne-Westland Schools Steps Down Amidst Criticism

Wayne-Westland Schools saw a major shift in leadership this summer when long-standing superintendent, John Dignan, made the decision to resign. Jennifer Curry is now shouldering the responsibilities of the superintendent role in an interim capacity.

Despite some clouds of criticism lingering over the district, officials confirmed Dignan’s resignation was accepted during a formal Board of Education meeting held on August 19. The district community was informed through a statement sent out subsequently.

In the statement, the board’s president, Bradley Gray, expressed gratitude for Dignan’s committed service and highlighted that the terms of his resignation were mutually agreed upon by all parties involved. He did not reveal the specific reasons for the resignation, however, this comes not long after a wave of criticism targeted at Dignan.

Dignan, who joined the district in 2020, was put on administrative leave in June following allegations of allowing a $28 million budget shortfall during the last school year.

Jennifer Curry, serving as an assistant superintendent at the time, stepped up on the announcement of Dignan’s leave and began acting in the role of district superintendent. Her strong leadership skills and dedication to strive for another successful school year have been acknowledged and applauded by board members and district employees alike.

The Wayne-Westland school district is pushing forward under the sturdy leadership of Curry and her team with a steadfast conviction, aiming to nurture a new generation of responsible, knowledgeable, and globally conscious citizens. As for the process of identifying a permanent replacement for Dignan, the district is yet to share the specifics.
