‘Supervision,’ a compelling new play, explores the intricate relationships between an elderly man, his daughter, and their domestic worker. The production addresses vital themes of caregiving, dignity, and dependency, resonating with audiences, particularly advocates like Shalom Lim, who see their own experiences reflected on stage. As part of Wild Rice’s journey toward its 25th anniversary, this play aims to raise awareness about contemporary caregiving realities and the emotional challenges involved.
The theater world buzzed recently with the opening of ‘Supervision’, a powerful production that dives deep into the intertwining lives of an elderly man, his middle-aged daughter, and their live-in domestic worker. The stirring play not only delivers a gripping narrative but also shines a bright light on the pressing realities of caregiving, dependency, and the ever-important question of dignity.
Shalom Lim, a dedicated volunteer and member of the SingHealth Patient Advocacy Network (SPAN) since 2022, made quite the impression by attending this much-anticipated production. His presence was not merely as an audience member but as a heartfelt thank you for his significant contributions to various healthcare initiatives. SPAN is committed to enhancing healthcare experiences through the feedback of patients and caregivers. So attending this show, which aligns perfectly with his advocacy work, was a fitting tribute.
At its core, ‘Supervision’ tackles themes that are all too real for many, especially in today’s world where lives frequently crisscross in unexpected ways. With the backdrop of modern-day caregiving, the play explores the intricate layers of privacy and autonomy—as seen through the lenses of both disabled individuals and their caregivers. Lim found particular resonance with these themes as a patient-survivor of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The emotional depth of the story transported him, prompting reflections on his own journey and relationship with his long-term caregiver, Glenda, who returned to her home country, leaving behind a sense of loss and vulnerability.
Lim’s current caregiver is still acclimating to the intense responsibilities that accompany 24/7 assistance, allowing him to gain insight into the manifold complexities surrounding caregiving in this fast-paced environment. A significant part of daily life for many here involves hiring migrant domestic workers for long-term care. Yet, as ‘Supervision’ adeptly highlights, these arrangements come with their own unique set of challenges, particularly the risks of dependency and the erosion of independence for both disabled individuals and their dedicated caregivers. This ongoing theme of vulnerability—the feeling of being constantly monitored—struck a chord with Lim, as it does with numerous others in similar situations.
The play does not shy away from confronting the harsh realities surrounding caregiver burnout and the overlooked emotions of those who shoulder the burden of caretaking. Lim attended ‘Supervision’ not only as an observer but also in a professional capacity as he prepares for his own debut play, with plans to focus on themes relating to living life fully in the face of limited time. His aspirations aim to leverage the power of theater to uplift voices from underrepresented communities and advocate for disability rights across the board.
‘Supervision’ is part of the exciting journey for Wild Rice, a renowned theater company celebrated for its unique ability to weave Singaporean stories into compelling narratives. As they gear up for their 25th anniversary in 2025, Wild Rice is looking forward to presenting six productions that further explore Singaporean identity—an effort that resonates deeply within the community. With nearly 180 productions across its history, this theater has welcomed over 1.2 million audience members, proving that the appreciation for authentic storytelling knows no bounds.
For those eager to experience ‘Supervision’ and other upcoming events, tickets for the first three shows will be available soon. This is an opportunity not to be missed as they take on critical issues with a blend of humor and poignancy. Join the conversation about caregiving, dignity, and the emotions that bind us all, as this theater continues to push boundaries and redefine narratives in the heart of the community.
