Donald Trump’s Second Inauguration: Cold Weather and Heavy Security

Mark your calendars! On January 20, 2025, Donald Trump will take the oath of office once again, as he embarks on his second term as President. While his first inauguration in 2017 attracted over 1 million people, this time around, only about 250,000 attendees are expected to brave the elements in Washington, D.C.

Brace for the Cold!

If you’re planning to attend, be sure to bundle up! The weather forecast is predicting chilly temperatures around 22 degrees Fahrenheit (that’s about -6 degrees Celsius) at noon on the big day. This will mark the coldest inauguration in the past four decades. With the arrival of Arctic air caused by a polar vortex disruption, temperatures are expected to drop across much of the nation, potentially affecting an astounding 280 million Americans!

Wind chills could make it feel even colder, dipping into the single digits thanks to blustery winds clocking in at 30 to 35 mph (approximately 48 to 56 kph). So, if you’re one of the brave souls venturing out, dressing in layers is going to be essential!

Security is No Joke!

security to a whole new level. In response to heightened concerns due to previous violent incidents, 25,000 law enforcement and military personnel will be on duty in the capital city. This includes the full activation of D.C. police and about 7,800 National Guard troops. Additionally, roughly 4,000 officers from various locations across the country are expected to lend a hand.

To further fortify the area, over 30 miles of anti-scale fencing have been erected around key locations, a move that is significantly more extensive than measures taken during past national security events. With the prospect of protests looming, these steps are in place to ensure both safety and peace.

Protests on the Horizon

January 18, and large anti-Trump rallies are planned for Inauguration Day itself, led by several activist groups. In a different vibe altogether, a Trump victory rally featuring the iconic Village People will be taking place at the Capital One Arena on January 19.

Public Spending Scrutiny

$1.5 million for an elevated viewing stand for local lawmakers— a decision that has garnered mixed reactions from the public.

It’s evident that the upcoming inauguration poses unique challenges, particularly in light of polar vortex disruptions which are becoming more common, likely due to the impacts of climate change. With all eyes on Washington, it will be intriguing to see how events unfold in the midst of this wintry atmosphere. Keep warm, stay safe, and if you’re joining in on the celebrations or protests, make sure to layer up!
