Former Wayne County Police Sergeant Convicted of Ethnic Intimidation and Assault Following Casino Incident

Wayne County Former Police Sergeant Found Guilty in Intimidation Case

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – A former police sergeant from Westland has been convicted of ethnic intimidation and assault against a security guard at a local casino. The jury reached its verdict on November 1, 2024, in a case stemming from an incident that occurred in April 2023.

The former officer, Kevin Yudt, 43, from Grass Lake, was found guilty on two counts of ethnic intimidation, each carrying a potential two-year prison sentence, as well as one count of assault and battery, which is a 93-day misdemeanor.

According to court records, the incident took place on April 6, 2023, at the MGM Grand Detroit. Yudt attempted to enter the casino but was denied access by security staff due to appearing intoxicated. Following this denial, Yudt lashed out by identifying himself as a Westland police sergeant and making threatening remarks, stating, “I’ll be waiting for you when you come to Westland, and you will not survive.” He then proceeded to poke a security guard in the chest while unleashing a barrage of racial slurs.

As a result of the incident, Yudt was terminated from his position with the Westland Police Department in May 2023, just a month after the altercation. Charges against him were officially filed in May 2024.

Yudt is scheduled to be sentenced in the 3rd Circuit Court on December 6, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., where the judge will determine the consequences for his actions.
