Election campaign debate stage.

In Westland, Wayne County, a host of familiar and new faces are throwing their hats into the race for local school boards. The board of education elections are set for Nov. 5, so let’s check out who’s on the ballot in each school district.

Wayne-Westland Community Schools

Two contenders have stepped up for the two open six-year seats here. Fred Weaver, a seasoned trustee, will run alongside Shannon Rochon, who recently sought Wayne’s state House seat. In addition, Andrew Ambrus is the solo candidate for a two-year term on the board. The current President Bradley Gray and trustee Mark Neal are sitting this one out. The new board will have their work cut out for them, tackling challenges like significant budgetary issues and a superintendent investigation.

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools

One seat is up for grabs here with two hopefuls in the running. The victorious candidate will hold this seat for a two-year term, slightly less than the usual four or six years typically seen. Patti McCoin, Jennifer Vos, and Faize El-Khali are all in the race, with McCoin having filled an appointed role on the board since last year.

Livonia Public Schools

With four seats open for four-year terms, five enthusiastic candidates have filed their paperwork. Karen Bradford, Crystal Frank, Madeline Acosta, Pamela Morgan, and David MacFarland have all signed up. Bradford, Frank, and Acosta are currently on the board already. Notably, Secretary Tammy Bonifield is stepping down this time.

Garden City Public Schools

Two seats are open here, and both incumbents, Sarah Roffi and Lynette Childress, are running again for their four-year terms. Interestingly, there were only two candidates for the three open positions. After current member Darlene Jablonowski steps down, the board will appoint someone to take over the remaining seat.

With such a diverse list of candidates, the Wayne County school boards may likely see some fresh perspectives in the coming term. Mark your calendars for Nov. 5 to cast your votes and have a say in shaping the future of local education. Remember, every vote counts!
