In Westland, the state representative seat is up for grabs and things are heating up as we head into the Democratic primary on August 6. Our current rep, Peter Herzberg, is getting ready for round two wrestling with four other contenders for the task.
Herzberg won his ticket to the role in a special election in April and is now raring to go again. With a background in accounting, Herzberg has got big plans to bring back more funds to Westland for local projects like roads, parks, and recreation. He feels that new state reps often struggle for cash but that he got to a really good start, with help from his cousin, Kevin Coleman, who happens to be Westland’s current Mayor.
At 33, Herzberg already has a stint at the Westland City Council under his belt. There, he made history by being both the youngest person ever elected and the one to serve for the longest time. He’s received quite a few endorsements from several mayors and, apparently, he’s got a good rapport with the teacher’s union.
Now, let’s turn to one of Herzberg’s rivals, Layla Taha. Currently a communications director for U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Detroit, Taha is deeply involved with health policy. She has a burning passion for resident’s health needs and is a big supporter of universal health care.
Then we have Melandie Yvonne Hines, a community lady through and through. Having worked in grassroots organizing for years, Hines is all about keeping the seat democratic. She’s also got strong feelings about affordable housing and securing better-paying jobs for the people.
Next in line is Lekisha Maxwell, a businesswoman with a heart for community service. After the ruckus of 2020, she took up working on local boards and commissions to make a difference. With a Masters in Business Administration, she wants to bring her experience to Lansing.
Last but definitely not the least is Salif Kourouma. He’s currently jobless, but he sees being a state rep as a possible career path. He believes there aren’t any major issues in the 25th District, he just wants to bring in some positivity.
Seems like we got quite the match-up ahead. There’s gonna be a lot of great ideas and strong leadership to choose from on August 6th.
